Programming a STAR in the FMC of a B-747,MD-11

What is the correct way to enter a STAR into a CDU/FMC ?

 

Runway first and then the STAR ?

 

STAR first and then the runway ?

I beieve you would normally enter the runway first as this will filter the available stars to show only those available for that particular runway. I cannot confirm that this is the case though for every implementation. Best to check the manual for each model.

Normally the arrival first. Often times you will not know the runway until you are closer to the airport. A good rule would be to enter items in the order you will fly them.
